The Japanese kanji word “位置 (いち-ichi)” means “position or situation”.
The Japanese kanji symbol “位 (い-i or くらい-kurai)” (see my Jouyou kanji list) has meaning of rank or grade etc. Here are some Japanese kanji words in which the kanji character “位” is contained.
上位 (じょうい-joui) means high rank. We use this word like the following example; この試験で上位に入ることは、私にとって非常に難しいことだ (kono shiken de joui ni hairu koto ha, watashi ni totte hijou ni mutsukashii kotoda) – It is very difficult for me to get higher rank on this examination.
方位 (ほうい-houi) means direction (such as north direction, east direction etc).
即位 (そくい-sokui) means accession.
