Kanji 東西南北

The Japanese Kanji 東means east, 西 means west, 南 means south, and 北 means north. And we say “東(ひがし -> higashi) ” or “東の方角 (ひがしのほうがく -> higashi no hougaku)” for east direction.

So for west direction we say “西(にし-> nishi) ” or “西の方角 (にしのほうがく -> nishi no hougaku)”.

For south direction, we say “南(みなみ-> minami) ” or “南の方角 (みなみのほうがく -> minami no hougaku)”.

For north direction, we say “北(きた-> kita) ” or “北の方角 (きたのほうがく -> kita no hougaku)”.

For 東 we also pronounce this kanji as “あずま -> azuma and とう -> tou”. For example; Tokyo of Japan we write 東京 and pronounce “とうきょう”.

For 西 we also pronounce this kanji as “さい -> sai and せい -> sei”.

For 南 we also pronounce this kanji as “なん -> nan”.

For 北 we also pronounce this kanji as “ほく-> hoku”.

And for the kanji word 東西南北 we pronounce “とう ざい なん ぼく -> tou zai nan boku”.
